چکیده

A pure exchange economy generates a “market game” in which the allocations achievable by any coalition are determined by the initial endowments of its members. Subject to certain regularity conditions, it is shown that for a market game it is possible to find utility representations for each consumer so that the game can be treated as a game with transferable utility if and only if indirect utility of all consumers can be represented in the Gorman polar form. This is the class for which aggregate demand behaves as if it were the demand of a single consumer. Journal of Economic Literature Classification Numbers: 021, 022. cc: 1985 Academic

Preliminary Draft Government by Jury by Theodore C . Bergstrom Hal

We consider a simple model of social choice where the voters find it costly to determine their true preferences. Since the influence of an individual voter decreases as the group size increases, each individual finds it optimal to invest less time in contemplating his values in larger groups than in smaller groups. This suggests that a desirable social choice mechanism might be to randomly choo...

Center for Research on Economic and Social Theory CREST Working Paper Assortative Mating with Household Public Goods

This paper analyzes marriage market equilibria when the gains from marriage result from joint consumption of household public goods. Assuming a class of utility functions which guarantee transferable utility within marriage, the paper proves that marriage markets will be characterized by positive assortative mating on income. A tendency for positive assortative mating on wages is also demonstra...

Two Remarks on Cournot Equilibria

Making the weak assumption that the left-hand side of this equation is downward sloping, there will be a unique Y that solves this equation, which depends only on the sum of the marginal costs, not on their distribution across the firms. The observation that output and price in a Cournot industry is independent of the distribution of marginal costs has undoubtably been noted and used several ti...

On the Private Provision of Public Goods

We consider a general model of the non-cooperative provision of a public good. Under very weak assumptions there will always exist a unique Nash equilibrium in our model. A small redistribution of wealth among the contributing consumers will not change the equilibrium amount of the public good. However, larger redistributions of wealth will change the set of contributors and thereby change the ...

Center for Research on Economic and Social Theory Research Seminar in Quantitative Economics

We consider a model of the non-cooperative provision of a public good. We show that there will in general exist a unique Nash equilibrium. The equilibrium provision of the public good will be independent of certain kinds of redistributions of wealth among the set of agents who are actually contributing to the public good, but will depend in general on the composition of the contributing set of ...
